How CAD is used by Real Estate Developers

How CAD is used by Real Estate Developers

CAD software, short for Computer-Aided-Design, has revolutionized real estate development since the technology was first implemented decades ago. In real estate, it is used to create and edit 2D and 3D digital models of construction sites and buildings. As with other design software, CAD software programs have advanced tremendously to their current state.

The Software Itself

There are numerous CAD software applications for architecture; the most commonly used include Revit Architecture and Rhino 3D. Some applications are designed primarily for residential designs, while others work better for designing commercial properties. Certain programs work better on a smaller of a larger scale. Some CAD applications are more like GPS programs and work with reviewing humongous amounts of land spanning over a dozen miles. Operating CAD applications requires a lot of computing, users often have a powerful computer. Having previous experience with design and creative software can make it easier to learn how to use CAD applications.

Virtual Reality

In more recent years, real estate developers have been able to use VR goggles and technology to show individuals exactly what a site will look like in front of their eyes. This tech can be used in any space but is especially helpful on the actual construction site. A developer can walk around a location with a client or investor wearing VR goggles, showing them in detail their vision of the final construction. This innovation not only helps developers sell their clients on a project, but it also creates more jobs related to VR and tech in real estate and construction, as what is seen in these goggles will need to be digitally designed.

3D Printing

With advances in 3D printing, creating precise models of buildings designed on a computer has become standard. CAD software allows architects and interior designers opportunities to see their designs come to life and share them with others. As with VR, a developer showing a potential client a tangible model of what a property will look like is a great way to sell them on a project. Sizes of 3D printed models of construction sites can range from inches to dozens of feet, depending on the needs and desires of the developer, and it is all designed using CAD software.

Controlling Spending

When using CAD applications, architects who decide which materials will be used for construction can determine how much of each material is needed for the construction process. Think of it as counting the number of different kinds of LEGO bricks in a set. This is an incredible help to real estate developers, who can have a much better idea of the cost of constructing a site when budgeting for their project.
